Some jewelry catches your eye for its glow. Other pieces speak to you because of what they represent. A name, a birth flower, a word you carry with you. When both come together, you want to look a little closer.
In a photograph, two gold-coloured necklaces can look almost identical. Beneath the surface, however, their composition may be quite different. Sterling silver, gold vermeil, gold plating: these terms appear in descriptions without always making their meaning clear.
Gold vermeil deserves a closer look. Behind its golden glow is a combination of two precious metals: silver and gold.
Silver at its heart, gold on its surface
A gold vermeil piece begins with a sterling silver base coated in gold. Silver forms the body of the jewelry; gold gives it its colour and glow.
At Cœur Ailleurs, our personalized 18K gold vermeil jewelry has a 925 sterling silver base with a 5 to 7 micron layer of gold.
What does 925 mean? The alloy contains 92.5% silver. Also known as sterling silver, it forms the jewelry beneath its gold finish. Vermeil brings two precious metals together in one creation, a composition worth considering when choosing a piece for its materials as well as its design.

Is gold vermeil real gold?
Yes, the gold coating on vermeil jewelry is real gold alloy. On our designs, it is 18K gold applied over silver. Silver forms the body of the piece and gold covers its surface.
This distinguishes vermeil from solid gold jewelry, whose metal is a gold alloy throughout. It also helps explain the price difference: a vermeil piece contains less gold than a comparable solid gold design.
Their material value is different. Vermeil offers a more accessible way to wear a real gold finish over a precious silver base.
Gold vermeil and other types of gold jewelry
From the outside, gold jewelry can have a similar glow. The difference lies in how each piece is made, and in the metal beneath its surface.

Gold vermeil brings two precious metals together: a sterling silver base and a layer of gold. At Cœur Ailleurs, our personalized gold vermeil jewelry combines 925 sterling silver with 18K gold, applied in a layer of 5 to 7 microns.
Gold-plated jewelry has a layer of gold applied to another metal. That metal might be brass, copper or silver. Both the composition and the coating thickness vary between designs.
Gold-filled jewelry has a layer of gold alloy mechanically bonded to a base metal. This construction differs from conventional gold plating; the proportion of gold is a useful detail to check when comparing pieces.
Solid gold jewelry is made from a gold alloy throughout its metal, rather than a gold coating over another base. Its karat purity tells you the proportion of gold in that alloy: 18K gold, for example, contains 75% gold.

Vermeil is a particular form of gold plating over silver. Its first distinction is inside: the base is a precious metal. You cannot see that detail when wearing your necklace, but it gives meaning to the choice of material.
The other detail to consider is the thickness of the gold layer. “Gold plated” alone does not give you enough information to compare two pieces. The base metal, the gold purity and the coating thickness help explain more precisely what you are choosing.
Karats and microns tell different stories
You have probably seen the term “18K gold.” It describes the proportion of gold in the alloy: 18 parts out of 24, or 75%.
Microns measure the thickness of the layer applied to the jewelry. One micron is one thousandth of a millimetre. The two measurements complement each other: karats describe the gold used; microns describe the thickness of its application.
For our personalized gold vermeil jewelry, we chose a 5 to 7 micron layer of 18K gold. That thickness is part of its quality, alongside the silver base and the attention given to finishing.
Can gold vermeil be worn every day?
A personalized piece is often something you want to wear every day. It becomes part of your routine and sometimes a signature.
Gold vermeil can have a place in that everyday life. How it wears depends on the quality and thickness of the coating, as well as the conditions in which it is worn. Our designs' 5 to 7 micron layer is an important part of their composition.
Like any coating, the gold layer can change with time and friction. That does not mean the piece will quickly lose its glow or should be reserved for special occasions. Each person has their own habits, and each piece lives a different story.
Solid gold has a distinction: its colour does not rely on a gold layer applied over another metal. It can also scratch and need care, but it does not face the same question of plating wearing away. As with jewelry in general, gentle cleaning and careful storage help preserve its beauty.
Why we chose gold vermeil for our personalized jewelry
A personalized piece rarely begins with a question about metal. It begins with a person. A child's name. A city you have left without quite leaving it behind. A word that gives you courage or recalls a happy chapter.
At Cœur Ailleurs, we wanted to give those messages a precious material and a clearly stated composition. That is why our vermeil designs combine 925 sterling silver with 18K gold, in a layer measuring 5 to 7 microns.
The MIAMI personalized necklace gives shape to your chosen name or word. The GIVERNY birth flower necklace adds a floral motif. The TOGETHER personalized heart necklace brings two names, two words or two messages into one design, within the space available.
Different creations, sharing one intention: to wear something that matters to you. These specifications apply to our personalized pieces in the vermeil finish. Other Cœur Ailleurs collections have their own materials, detailed on each product page.
A piece you choose for yourself, too
Understanding gold vermeil lets you see a golden piece differently. You discover what lies behind its glow: a silver base, a gold layer and manufacturing choices that a photograph cannot always convey.
But the choice remains personal. A material, a shape and, above all, a message you want to keep close.
